A step by step method to make a 3.0 metre gate.

MATERIALS
You will need the folowing: 1 1/2 lengths of 25NB Galtube* Ultra (1 length 6.5m) 1 1/2 lengths of 20NB Galtube* Ultra 1/2 sheet sheepyard mesh (6.0m long x 0.9m high)

EQUIPMENT
Tape measure, chalk (or marker) Hacksaw, pipe cutter or cut off saw bolt cutters. Pipe bender and 25NB former 1 large square (you can make your own)

AIM
To make a standard 3.0m farm gate.

STEP 1

Calculation - use the drawings given in HOE TO NO.2 to make the calculations (all dimensions in millimetres) (A) Drawing - Draw an outline of the gate. This avoids mistakes (usual height for a farm gate a about 1180mm) (B) Cutting Length Total length of pipe = leg 1 + width + leg 2 - gain Z (see sheet 2 for Z value) = 1180 + 3000 + 1180 - 205 = 5155 (cut pipe to this length) (C)Bending Mark Bending Mark = leg length - Gain X (see sheet No.2 for X value) = 1180 - 45 = 1135
STEP 2
Cut and Bend - (A) cut your 25NB Galtube* Ultra pipe at 5155mm. Cut squarely either with a hacksaw, pipe cutter or cut-off saw. (B) Make a mark 1135mm in from each end. (C) Place the pipe in the former so the bending mark lines up with the centre of the former. Bend until the angle is more than a right angle. When the pressure is released the pipe will bend back. You will need some practice to judge the correct bend. Bend the other end of the same (being careful not to twist the frame). Check the two angles are right angles and the dimensions of the frame. NOTE: You may have to make some changes to your calculations if the dimensions are not shown as above.

GATE RAILS (A) After checking the angles measure the inside distance between the two gate legs. Measure just below the bend. (B) Cut a piece of 25NB and a piece of 20NB to this length. (C) Weld these rails as shown. A small upright may also be added. (D) The mesh will not fit neatly between the two rails and can be welded in place.

CONGRATULATIONS You have now the basic steps for making a gate of any size you need
