PIPE SIZES
The sizes of pipes suggested are based upon typical beef and dairy herds. The following sizes are based on grade C350 steel pipe (Galtube* Ultra, Tubeline 350).

Posts, corners and gates 80NB
Race bows 50NB
Sliding gate supports 50NB
Sliding gates 32NB

Race frames, railed 32NB or 40NB
Gates up to 3.0m 32NB or 40NB
Gates over 3.0m 40NB
Man gates 25NB

PANEL SIZES
As in all cases, the size of the panel should be chosen to suit the material. In most instances the smaller diameter pipe may be used with shorter panels.

2.4m panels may be constructed from 32NB Galtube* Ultra, longer panels should be made from 40NB.

Cattle yard panels of 1600mm total height are sufficient for most situations. Alter the spacing to suit your needs, lower rails need to be closer together than upper rails. Use a centre support (preferably of pipe) in the panel and gates.

PANEL HEIGHTS
Panel heights of 1600mm above ground level are often sufficient. A panel of 1400mm, raised 200mm above the ground will give this finished height.

RAIL SPACING
Lower rails should be more closely spaced than the higher rails. Common spacings for the two standard heights are shown. The dimensions given are for 32NB ipie. (see worksheet no. 1 for outside diameters of standard pipes)

NOMINAL BORE OUTSIDE DIAMETER
25NB 33.7
32NB 42.4
40NB 48.3
50NB 60.3

RACE PANELS
Due to increased pressure in this area, 40NB Galtube* Ultra should be used. Panels may be made as gates to permit removal of animals along the race for additional drafting.
The race should be approximately 680 - 730mm wide.

SLIDING GATES
A sliding gate should not protrude into the race. The post supports for the sliding gate may double as posts for the race panels. The rolling track can be purchased commercially as industrial sliding door track and carriages.

You can also make your own by sliding a larger diameter pipe over a small pipe rail (you will need to keep this well greased)

MAN GATES
Man ways may be left as openings in the fence. These should not exceed 280mm. Dimensions are shown. Man gates should not exceed 500mm and spring loaded gates are preferable.

HINGES
You can construct your own hinges using small lengths of pipe and smaller diameter pipes as pins. Cattle yard gates should swing to the fully open position to avoid damage to the gate. Double swinging gates should open against the fence in both directions.

LATCHES
You can use either bolts or chain catches. Catches can be made from 75 x 5 flat and 6mm chain is sufficient. Latches can be self closing, spring loaded.
